Rotary Club of Msasa’s Visit to Charltan Trust: Empowering Teenage Mothers through Education and Skill Development
On a recent visit to Charltan Trust, in Ruwa, a home for teenage mothers started by Charlene Vuta, RC Msasa witnessed firsthand the incredible work being done to empower young women. Many of these young mothers have been cast out of their families and abandoned by the fathers of their children, leaving them vulnerable, isolated, and without support. The Charltan Trust serves as a sanctuary, offering not only a safe family environment for these girls to finish growing up while raising their children but also essential formal education and vocational training to help them build a future. The ability to learn a trade gives them the opportunity to earn a living, support their families, and regain their sense of dignity.

During the visit, RC Msasa donated fabric materials and sewing machines to Charlton Trust, enabling the young mothers to continue to create bags, hats, and other handmade products. The Founding Trustee and Home Coordinator, Charlene Vuta revealed that they recently secured a contract to supply their creations to an exclusive international retail outlet in Harare. This exciting development is poised to provide the collective with access to global markets, foster valuable cultural exchange, and create opportunities for further artistic development through advanced studies or residencies.
The donation of these materials and machines is an investment in their futures, providing them not just with the tools to make a product, but with the tools to build self-reliance and empowerment. With every bag sewn and every hat created, they are gaining confidence and developing the skills they need to live independently and support their children.

The visit was highlighted by the presence of the District Governor Tom Kamwendo, whose support reinforced the importance of our collective efforts in service to the community. The District Governor’s participation reminded us that Rotary is not just about individual projects, but about creating lasting change through collaboration and shared responsibility. The Governor spoke of Rotary’s emphasis on sustainability and collaboration with community initiatives and other donors. He commended the work Charlton Trust does to lift those who have been pushed aside and forgotten by society. He encouraged everyone present to continue pushing through the challenging circumstances and encouraged each of the young women in their ambitions for the future.
The home itself runs largely on donations from well-wishers, which means every day is a bit of a struggle to make ends meet. Charlene shared with us that they were behind on the rent and only had enough money for one and a half weeks of food.

In this tight-knit community, the girls share responsibilities—taking turns to care for their children, cook, and keep the house clean. A house matron/mother takes on the role of a caregiver to the girls, guiding them as they learn to care for their babies and offering a shoulder to cry on when needed.

The girls’ bedrooms are modest, shared with two or three other girls and their children. Yet, despite their difficult circumstances, moments of normalcy and joy shine through. Personal belongings are stored away on overhead shelves in the bedroom. Like many young girls, they too share the universal love for fashion— with a surprising collection of shoes. This small detail, amidst the hardships, speaks volumes about their hope for a future where they too can have the freedom to express themselves, no matter how humble the circumstances. It’s in these small acts of self-care and individuality that their spirits remain unbroken.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Partnership As we left Charlton Trust, we felt deeply moved by the resilience and determination of the young mothers we had met. The Trust’s work is a powerful example of service above self— providing not only shelter but also the tools for these young women to reclaim their lives.

Our Rotary Club is committed to continuing our partnership with Charlton Trust. Moving forward, we will explore additional ways to support the organization, whether through donations, advocacy, or volunteer efforts. Together, we can help provide these young mothers with the skills and opportunities they need to build a better future for themselves and their children.
