Rotary International has been a leader in the global fight to end polio, and this year’s “End Polio Now” run in Zimbabwe marked another important step toward that goal. Held on October 19th at Gateway High School, the event united community members, Rotary Club members, and local supporters, all coming together to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Mount Pleasant was painted with participants wearing bright red shirts, creating a sea of color that reflected the vibrant spirit of unity, fellowship, and friendship. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and camaraderie, making it a truly unforgettable day for everyone involved.

Participants of all ages and abilities come together to show their support for the cause, creating a vibrant atmosphere of fellowship and community. Whether they’re seasoned runners or families enjoying a leisurely walk, the event is about more than just the race – it’s a time to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships. Throughout the morning, attendees enjoyed educational activities, inspiring speeches from passionate advocates, and opportunities to learn more about Rotary’s ongoing efforts to end polio. But above all, it was a celebration of fellowship, laughter, and good cheer because, as we all know, if it’s not fun, it’s not Rotary!

All funds raised from the “End Polio Now” run go directly toward supporting polio eradication efforts. A portion of the funds is matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has pledged to match every dollar donated two-to-one. This means that each contribution is effectively tripled, making every dollar raised go even further in protecting children from polio.

Since 1985, Rotary International has been dedicated to eradicating polio worldwide, and its “End Polio Now” initiative has been a cornerstone of that effort. Through the partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Rotary has been instrumental in reducing polio cases by over 99% worldwide. With only a few remaining pockets of polio in the world, this run symbolizes more than just a race; it represents the relentless pursuit of a polio-free future for every child, everywhere.

Though the battle against polio is far from over, significant progress has been made. The number of polio cases has dropped dramatically, with countries like India, once considered a polio hotspot, now being declared polio-free. Yet, polio persists in a few countries, making continued vaccination campaigns and public awareness efforts crucial.
